Bygghytta, a National Competence Centre
Bygghytta at Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Works (NDR) was appointed by the parliament to be a national center of competence for conservation and restauration of protected stone buildings.
The Norwegian parliament has designated the restoration workshop (Bygghytta) belonging to Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Works (NDR) as a national competence centre for the preservation and restoration of historic stone buildings.
This means that in addition to restoring and maintaining Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace, the NDR is tasked with preserving and further developing the traditional crafts represented at the Bygghytta craftsmen’s lodge. Skills handed down from master to apprentice has always been an important function of craft workshops, and cross-functional expertise is now highly prized. Today, the traditional, in-house training of craftsmen and women is combined with a BSc in building preservation at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
